Triggers & Glimmers

They go hand in hand.

!CAUTION!

The definitions below are provided by the Gracen Dictionary of Loose Interpretation & Personal Experience. This source is meant to be taken with .5 grain of salt. ‘Tis somewhat of a mix between dictionary and autobiographical fiction.

Moving on.

Triggers are those things that make you scrunch your eyebrows, bring up a bad memory, tingle your spidey senses, and basically give you the ick. They pop up out of nowhere and can stop you in your tracks. At their least, they make you uncomfy. At their worst, well, they elicit flashbacks to a time you’d rather forget. If you know what I’m talking about from personal experience, I extend you the most sincere virtual hug.

Glimmers, on the other hand, are the exact inverse! They are the dolphin to the shark. The M&M to the raisin in your trail mix (no shade to my raisin lovers out there). The lucky penny to the gum stained sidewalk. I’m trying to say that glimmers are the lovely little moments that warm your heart and get Oh What a Wonderful World stuck in your head. Glimmers restore your sense of safety and awe in the world even if just for a moment.

The funny thing is that we appreciate glimmers so much less if we never experience triggers. Think about it: If winter never came, we wouldn’t appreciate the blooms of spring. If toddlers never fell, we wouldn’t cheer at the top of our lungs when they walk.

Today, seek out the glimmers! Especially if your life seems riddled with triggers.

When glimmers seem scarce I seek them through art! It might be a painting that makes me smile, a song that makes me dance, or a crochet project so soft that I am convinced “this MUST be what clouds feel like.” Sometimes you have to take happy into your own hands and create the glimmer you need.

If you’re in a sans-glimmer rut, maybe borrow a page from my book?

xoxo,

g
